Building Links for SEO

So you want your page to rank high in the search engines- don’t we all? Well like many things in life, getting what you want takes some work. In the SEO business, link building tends to be the most meticulous part of the process. But suck it up; we all have to do it.

The question is how do you build the most links in the least amount of time? The shortcuts are tempting, but you’ll soon find that choosing the easy out might mean taking a swan dive in a shallow pool—using short cuts could essentially lead to demoted rankings, lost time, and worse yet, wasted money.

The quickest and easiest way to build links to your site is of course, simply buying them. Of all the shortcuts, purchasing links seems to be the most obvious and direct. Don’t get me wrong, buying links can help your site. It’s the way in which the tactic is carried out is what stirs up the controversy.

The search engines’ biggest pet peeve about paid links is when websites buy a massive load of unrelated links. However, when used properly, buying links provides an effective way to build your links. In order to avoid the hassle of demoted rankings, do your homework. Find sites with related topics and content in which to purchase your links. Go even further and make sure the link is directed to a relevant page of your site. And don’t go crazy- all of your links should never solely exist via paid links.

The other route you can take to build links is the grandpa of methods in the SEO world. You can purchase old or dead sites and redirect incoming traffic straight over to you. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, like purchasing links, the key to using this method successfully is relevance; does the dead site you’ve purchased have anything to do with your site? If the answer is no, then you’re probably headed for more problems than you’ve bargained for.

Instead of ranking high in the search engines through your site’s keywords, you end up ranking high with ridiculous, nonsense search terms. Let’s say you buy an old vacuum site, and redirect all of its traffic to your site which sells formal gowns and accessories. Congratulations, you’ve just earned the number one rank for “Vacuum prom dresses”- a search phrase you can be sure that no one is interested in. If you’re keen using the old site method, again, make sure the site is relevant to yours.

And of course, there’s always the trusted and true method of reciprocal linking. A “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” way to build links while helping another site do the same. Reciprocal linking can help you, just don’t over-do it. It’s necessary to have some solid, independent links to your site in order to build up the trust in your page. Also, if your only links are reciprocal links, you’re putting up a red flag for demotion by the search engines. The search engines need to see that your site is relevant enough that reciprocal links aren’t the only routes to your site.

All in all, there are many ways you can build your links. A healthy mix of each method used modestly is the best way to utilize linking. But always remember; keep your links full of quality and relevance and you’re sure to build your link quota successfully.
