Link Choice Basics
It’s pretty clear that in order to rank high in the search engines, your site needs incoming links. However, just any old link certainly won’t do the trick. Your choice of links should definitely include some thought. Here are some basics about the most effective incoming links your site should focus on using.
1. Relevance
The search engines love sites that have links of relevance. It’s a simple law of SEO; the more relevant pages that link to your site, the higher your rankings. Make sure to choose sites of relevant topics and content.
2. Link to a Relevant Page
So you got rule number one down, and you’ve linked your page to other pages of relevance. The next step is to be sure that the link directs users to a relevant page of your site. Avoid solely linking back to your homepage. Remember, more relevance equates higher rankings.
3. Match Keywords and Anchor Text
A simple matching game is in order to obtain higher page rank. Since the actual link text is used to rank your site, the link text and search terms should match. So be sure that you use the same link texts that you want searched.
4. Authority Sites
A link to your site from an authority is a hot commodity in today’s SEO market. High authority sites are the key to increasing the TrustRank of your site. Now how do you figure out which sites quality as authority? A mixture of common sense and PageRank is necessary. However, don’t put all of your marbles in the PageRank listed. Oftentimes such advertised ratings are just that- advertisement. Choose well known sites with high rankings and you’ll increase the odds that you’re choosing an authority site.
5. Avoid Nofollow Attributes
The sites that link back to your page should never include a nofollow attribute. Nofollow simply tells search engines that they shouldn’t follow a link. Seeing as this counteracts your intentions, it is imperative that you do not choose such sites.
How can you tell if a site includes a nofollow attribute? Well, you’ll have to check out the HTML code of each site manually. Or you can save some time and use the check command in IBP and ARELIS to check on the nofollow attribute of your link partners.
